The Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei was born in Pisa on 15 February 1564. Considered the father of modern science for having introduced the scientific method, Galileo was a supporter of the Copernican theory that sees the Sun at the centre of the solar system and not the Earth.
In order to achieve full and equal access to and partecipation in science for women and girls, and further achieve gender equality and empowerment of women and girls, the United Nation General Assembly declared 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science in 2015.
