Enrico Fermi is considered, after Galileo Galilei, the greatest Italian physicist of all time. In his honor was given the name of an element of the periodic table, the fermium (symbol Fm), a submultiple of the meter commonly used in atomic and nuclear physics, the fermi, and one of the two classes of particles of quantum statistics, the fermions.
